Adam Lambert talks about life and his sexuality.

2009 American Music Awards - Rehearsals

Adam Lambert says he was getting “bored” with his life before auditioning for American Idol. Adam says the show helped him open up another chapter in his life.

“Being in L.A. around young Hollywood for the past eight years desensitized me to the whole machine. If this were brand new, I’d be overwhelmed. At 27, I’ve already done a lot of self-searching to learn who I am. Had this happened five years ago, I might not have handled it well. I didn’t have a strong sense of self. The timing worked out. I was getting bored with my life. Like, is this it? I was hungry for more. I got my wish!”

The openly-gay singer, insisted he has never been ashamed of his sexuality.

“There was never any deliberate, like, ‘I’m going to hint now…’ because I was never in the closet. When those pictures [of me dressed in drag and kissing an ex-boyfriend] came out online, I got freaked out. I was like, ‘Great, that’s going to f**k things up’. ‘Cause I just figured, you know, this is a national television program and people are conservative in our country, aside from LA and New York and a couple of other places. I think the whole magic of this moment is that I’m not alienating anybody. I’m not trying to, anyway. I want as many people to feel like they can like the music. I don’t want to edit myself to the point where I feel like I don’t have integrity… It’s almost like being a political figure. It’s like a balancing act.”
