31-years-ago, 1977, a US arrest warrant was issued for Roman Polanski for having sex with a 13-year-old girl.
The famous writer-director Roman Polanski was taken into custody in Switzerland while traveling from France. Polanski fled to France 31-years-ago, and was on his way to the Zurich Film Festival to collect a lifetime achievement award.
Switzerland will hold Polanski until the US decides on possible extradition where the original six counts against him were filed. He could face up to life in prison.
Last year Polanski’s lawyers filed to have the case dismissed and to have a hearing moved out of an LA court.
The new Judge agreed that there was misconduct on the part of the original judge, he still found that Polanski would have to return to the United States to apply for a dismissal.
Polanski was afraid that if he returned he would be arrested as a fugitive and decided not to return. Two years ago the documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
The documentary caused the case to be re-opened, and introduced the incident to an audience that wasn’t as familiar with what all went down between Polanski and the victim, Samantha Geimer, who, in recent years, has asked the court to drop the charges.
The decision has been made by the Zurich Film Festival to go ahead with its planned retrospective of Polanski’s work and a special ceremony will be held Sunday night “to allow everyone to express their solidarity for Roman Polanski and their admiration for his work,” according to the festival manager.
Actress Sharon Tate and 4 others were found brutally murdered at her Benedict Canyon estate August 9, 1969.
