As I explained in my last post, the Florida Highway Patrol did try to visit with Tiger Woods and his wife Elin a few hours ago.
The police want to get a statement and ask a few questions about the single-car accident yesterday morning (Nov. 27, 2009) at around 2:25 a.m.
FHP spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes said that the troopers received a call from Tiger’s agent, Mark Steinberg, requesting that the interview be postponed until Sunday, and Sgt. Montes didn’t know if a reason was given by the agent.
Florida does not require that Tiger give a statement, “we simply want to ask why did he crash his car,” she said, adding, “All we’re trying to do is get his side of the story.”
So now the FHP will return to Tiger’s home tomorrow, and Sgt. Montes said that the police may be releasing the 911 tapes tomorrow as well.
A few more details have been released as well, Tiger’s wife, Elin Nordegren, told the police she was inside the house when she heard the accident. She said she went outside and used a golf club to break out the rear window of the vehicle, then pulled him from the SUV.
TMZ claims that Tiger told a friend that his wife went ballistic at around 2:00 AM yesterday and scratched his face up — all because of reports he allegedly had cheated on her. He left the house, started driving away and she attacked the SUV with a golf club, Tiger told the friend. He got “distracted” and hit the hydrant.
Tiger is very careful about who he chooses as friends and what he tells people, from everything I have read, I find it hard to believe that one of his friends would have told TMZ anything.
The police are saying that both rear passenger windows of the SUV were shattered and there was damage to the left and right of its front end, resulting in $5,000 to $8,000 in estimated damages. She said the left side hit the fire hydrant, the right hit the tree.
Elin did ride in the ambulance with Tiger, who was treated at Health Central Hospital before he was released Friday, Montes said Saturday.
